The role of sound in video games

December 26, 2011

Aaron Trammel shares his thoughts and observations on how sound and music work in video games, looking at Limbo and other titles.

The soundtrack of Limbo says a lot about the game, which in turn says a lot about our culture.Video games are rarely the object of analysis for sound culture studies, this is fairly counterintuitive considering both their social impact and technological nature.

Should sound studies take a closer look at video games – where would it start?

Creating the sound for LIMBO

July 21, 2011

Over at Audio Media magazine, John Broomhall talks to Martin Stig Andersen about the sound for Playdead’s award-winning LIMBO game:

‘There’s a lot of ambiguity in it that chimes with my primary background in acusmatic music where I would extract musical values from something as unlikely as traffic sounds.’

Interview with Fable III composer Russell Shaw

June 6, 2011

Gamespot has an interview up with Fable III composer Russell Shaw.

GS: What were some of the challenges working on the Fable series?

RS: Well, the Fable universe is absolutely huge. So many musical styles to cater for, and yet if I veer off what many consider to be the “correct” Fable path, it’s considered blasphemy by the Fable community fan base. Each new release of the Fable series requires a degree of freshness from the previous one, and coming up with new ideas is a challenge. Also, the sheer scale of each game means I have to compose a huge amount of material to cover it all without it becoming tedious or repetitive.
