Getting game audio right

November 2, 2010

Rob Bridgett has posted a great feature on how to integrate audio production into your game development schedule:

This feature takes a brief look at how to tie audio production dates into the overall delivery schedule of a large-scale video game — including the key dependencies you should be fully aware of.

During production, it is often the case for each component of game audio to be either dependent on some other area of work to be completed, or some other area of the game is dependent on audio finishing a particular piece of work. Understanding how all these pieces are inter dependant is the key to not only locking-in and delivering on-time, but also to staying agile and having a production schedule that is simple to read and aides communication across groups.

The working practice behind scheduling for video game production is an increasingly complicated one and boils down to an approach that embraces locking-in tightly and firmly committing, yet being ready and prepared for changes at any time.

At the same time, you must also fully understand that any changes will have implications elsewhere in the production.

Be sure to check out the full feature on game audio over at Gamasutra.

Sound and music for Borderlands

Defactosound talks to Raison Varner, Audio Lead at Gearbox Software on the sound for Borderlands

• DS: Did the change in Art Style affect the audio approach in any way?

It definitely affected the music direction, but sound design wise, we didn’t change a thing. The general direction we were taking was still very much applicable. More than just the art style, the entire attitude of the game shifted which really changed voice production and music production the most.

Audio scare tactics – Dead Space Extraction

April 20, 2010

Original Sound Version has an interesting interview with Don Veca, the Audio Lead on Dead Space Extraction for the Nintendo Wii.

Veca: One of the main differences for audio in the rail-shooter genre is that things are much more deterministic. We had to have a far more generalized approach for the original Dead Space game, because the audio had to adapt more to the decisions the player made while traversing through the game. On the other hand, the rail-shooter design is much more linear. This means we as developers usually know what’s going to happen at any time, including the exact timing of a lot of things, so we were definitely able to advantage of this sonically. The new design allowed us to approach the sound design a little more like we would for a linear movie.

Backstage with the audio for Guitar Hero 5

April 14, 2010

Gamasutra has posted an interesting behind-the-scenes on the audio for Guitar Hero 5:

While music from artists as diverse as Megadeth to Stevie Wonder and Muse immediately grab your attention when you talk about audio in a game like Guitar Hero, they are just a component of what makes the game fun to play.

There’s a lot going on behind the scenes to help really put people up on that stage and to make sure it’s fun, even as players clang a few notes. In this article I’ll look at some of the things we did in the audio and how we did our part to take Guitar Hero up a notch.

Hop on over here to read the full feature on the Guitar Hero 5 sound.
