Breaking into Game Audio

September 30, 2010

Mix Magazine takes a look at what it takes to get started in game audio:

So you’ve been thinking about trying your hand at the gaming industry, but is it a realistic goal for a studio like yours? The optimistic answer is, anything is possible. However, we’re not going to mislead you into thinking it’s going to be easy or that it’s going to happen overnight.

The legacy of composer Bernard Herrmann

September 27, 2010

Over at the Film Music Magazine website, Ron Hess takes a look at the history and legacy of legendary film composer Bernard Herrmann:

Recently, on a whim, I Googled the terms “unusual orchestration” and “film” together in a search for new and exotic “highs.” (Remember my recent “Orchestrational Aptitude Test?” Here’s where some of us get our jollies…) I found that, to the outside world, the term is so mis- and over-used as to be almost meaningless. Most of the links led to rather conventional film and concert scores, making me wonder if the use of live players at all is now considered “unusual.” Or perhaps the word has become such a relative term that it could even be applied to potato chips by one dining on a steady diet of chicken broth (ask any digestive track surgery patient…)

For the studio owners we talked to this month, the Internet has definitely had an impact, and it’s gone well beyond providing a simpler and more efficient delivery method to clients. Not only has it opened the door to new opportunities and sparked innovative approaches to optimizing sound quality, in some ways the Internet has triggered a complete overhaul in the way these studio owners do business.

The best voice actors of all time

September 6, 2010

Bernardo Villela over at The Wilmington Movie Examiner has taken a look at what he considers to be the 10 best voice actors of all-time:

10. Lorenzo Music (frequently credited as L. Music)

Music will have mostly television credits but most are significant. He is most well known for being the one and only voice of Garfield for years, sadly he passed before the film version and Bill Murray stepped into the irreplaceable part. His other credits include Peter Venkman on The Real Ghost Busters and Tummi Gummi on The Adventures of the Gummi Bears. He broke into voice work as Additional Voices on Hannah-Barbara’s The Jetsons.

9. Maurice LaMarche

He is perhaps most well-known as being the voice of The Brain, however, Maurice LaMarche has a much more flexible voice than most people realize playing stints as several characters including: George Wilson on Dennis the Menace, Chief Quimby on Inspector Gadget and recently on a straight-to-DVD film Inspector Gadget, Popeye, Egon Spengler on The Real Ghost Busters, Dizzy Devil, Scuttle on the TV show of The Little Mermaid, Orson Welles in Ed Wood, Jeremy Hawke on The Critic, Pepe Le Pew in Space Jam, video game incarnations of Yosemite Sam and Wile E. Coyote; Alec Baldwin in Team America: World Police, not to mention many narrator gigs, more than 200 credits total.

No prizes for guessing the winner though :)
